My fiance and I are taking a pregnancy class. We requested an interpreter, but were told they did not have one and didn't offer any. They are required by law! Now we are seeking legal action. And going to the class without an interpreter!!!!!

You are hearing and your fiance is deaf....(your profile)...so why do you need an interpreter?

It is better to discuss with ADA lawyer.

because her finance has right to request the interpreter under ADA law.

Feel sure she knows ASL...and with the shortage of interpreter's these days....I would rather they interpret for doctor's appts., and hospitalizations...even births of newborns (if the Mother is deaf or the father is deaf and wants to be at the actual birth)....but classes?

I don't like having my husband interpret for me at doctor's appts and stuff like that because it is not fair to him as a hearing person to take on that role.

But they are both "students" in the class so doing the interpreting would be a distraction for one of the "students".

Ditto...but just saying they both are going to this "pregnancy class"...I can honestly say...(in my case) (several times)...they did call for an interpreter...no one showed up....even as I was going into surgery....at the last minute before I went to sleep, the interpreter showed up...and after the surgery...no interpreter was there to tell me what the doctor was saying....so my friend had to interpret for me and she was hearing....I've had many interpreters say to me ..."I'm sorry I was late...or I was with an emergency patient"....or "I was held up in traffic"....many things....

It happens a lot....and it's not realistic thinking that an interpreter is going to be there for everything....We have a shortage of them where I live....

All in all, hopefully she can get an interpreter if that's what she and her boyfriend want...or really need.

I think I should make Vlog, maybe post at deaf newspaper.com

Some of you may know I went though trauma accident and went though trauma unit at hospital, was in icu for 4 days before finally got surgery. I was so pissed off and frustration that doctor didn't bring in terp.. IT sure boils me down for example a doctor try to tell me something and I said I can't hear or talk, please write on paper, doctor simply gave me a notepad and pen. I was furious! What I did was I wrote single word on notepad "WHAT?"

Doctor gulped and got interpreter. I decided to dig out patient right handbook. Most hospitals must provide patient rights handbook published by state. There was nothing showing where to find right to have terp. Not even in index, or glossary at all. I had to read though the booklet, viola! I found a paragraph explained that Deaf and HoH who depends sign language have the right request terp. So, next time, doctor came in, I showed this to them. I got silence from them, and they got terp for me right away!

Sadly, it was written to MAKE you look all over to find that part. It is there, but you gotta to read this. I felt like doing something about this, I don't think it is fair for them to bury and expect Deaf to find, not many Deafies can read!

She's probably not certified interpreter and the hospital has to pay interpreter.

ADA cover classes and have pregnancy class is very important.

I had ASL interpreters in most university classes and students have no problem with us. Some of them are curious about me and ASL interpreters.

Foxrac, I think they meant that if the deaf/hearing couple were both students and the hearing partner had to interpret the class then the hearing student would be distracted and miss a large chunk of what they are supposed to be learning in the class.

At least that's how I read the above from LoveBlue. :dunno:

Alright, also it is unethical to let hearing partner to interpret in meeting that consider as manner like classes are one of them.

I meant the hearing member of the couple in question who would be doing double duty - being a student & being the interpreter. I was not referring to the other students in the class.

when my wife and I took our parenting class, the hospital provided us with ASL interpreters.

There was absolutely no problem.

Ok, that what DD told me.

Update: we went to the class and i interpreted. The issue is that we requested one and were not provided with an interpreter . But I have no trouble interpreting my fiance simply did not want more to have to interpret. Either way it worked out and we enjoyed the class. However we are still bringing information about ADA and the problem.

I had interpreters at the hospital in Fairfax with no problem.

Did you contact patient relations office or social work office? Your deaf husband must call them via VP.

Often those in registration service don't know where to go in the hospital to provide interpreters.
