Hey there, folks! My husband has been Military for the past 5 years and we are going to be making the switch to civilian life in 2015 so I am really curious about Social Security and Disability. Granted, you never know exactly how any one situation will play out for example: Hubby and I could end up bringing in too much income to even apply for aid etc. But I was more curious as to the question: Are deaf children with cochlear implants even eligible for disability? I have seen where the deaf community itself has had it's ups and downs with SSDI and eligibility, so I'm not sure where our children would even fall into that whole thing. We have a couple years to ready ourselves for this shift in the way we provide medical for our children, but I would be so appreciative if someone in a similar situation could attempt to give me some answers? Both of our children are bilateral recipients of cochlears so they would just be needing some speech therapy and biannual mappings possibly. Any experiences you would like to share would be great! thanks!

I assume that you are talking about SSI since SSDI is for disabled people who had worked for at least 10 years. Your children are eligible for SSI if they are officially deaf, even though they wear CI but I don't know about household incomes. Why don't you apply to see if they are eligible? SSA has all the answers you need to know.

First of all, SS benefit dont help for CI. However, Medicare and Medicaid can, depends on what states can offer.

Secondly, if the parents of deaf children, it depends on how much parents' household income that deaf kids can be eligible to entitle to get a SS disability benefit ( either SSI or SSDI )

The best thing is for you to attend to your local social security office then they will be able to answer your question. If you or husband are not disabled and your kids, are then they will look up at your incomes to see if kids can be eligible to get a disability or not. Please please make an appointment with SSA that would be GREAT. Don't be afraid of asking SSA even though they can be difficult workers but its your rights to know about your record or your husbands record or your kids'.

Good Luck.

So any questions?

Is your child in the EFMP already? I would go there first. They can tell you what steps you need to take. I would think you would want to apply before he gets out

:)

thanks guys! yes, the kids are both already enrolled in EFMP, so I didn't really think of them being a good resource for civilian questions, but I suppose I could try there! :) And I have contacted disability, medicaid, job and family services etc in ohio but they all have the same answer: since it is so far out, they cannot give me any detailed answers as to if the kids would be eligible for anything or not. We won't know what our income will be for a couple of years, so we can't really take steps to even apply early. :-( So they said my best bet would be to call Childrens Hospital of Columbus Ohio to see if they see any cochlear kids come in for mappings that use medicaid. Did that. There are, but I guess I can't help but be curious as to if OUR children are eligible.
