Will the school pay for an FM system for me? If they do, I would have to leave it at school every day, right? I'm looking into getting one, but it would be cool to have the benefits at home, eating out, and everywhere else too...

How long have you worn hearing aids? If you've worn them for a while, I'm surprised your district didn't get you an FM sooner.

The school district is responsible for purchasing and maintaining the FM system, and you can have it written into your IEP that you will take it home for use in extra-curricular activities- whatever they may be.

Hi! I have worn hearing aids since I was 4 or 5, so about 12 years now.. apparently I didn't have bad enough hearing to need it when I was little though

Experiment and see if the FM is useful for you. It might be useful, but it also might not. It's recommended as a kneejerk accomondation....it can be helpful for some people, but other accomondations could work just as well, like circle seating etc.......

:hmm: Well let's think about this...

The OP appears to be around 16 or 17 and is only now enquiring whether or not the school would provide an FM system. That is probably at least 13-14 years within an educational system- and apparently no mention of an FM system.

I would infer that it is not as much of a knee jerk reaction as you believe. It would seem on the contrary, that perhaps the district isn't jerking enough if the OP didn't know one could be provided for her.

I think part of the confusion is from the fact that I went to a private school up until fifth grade, so in the smaller classrooms it wasn't necessary. I guess by the time I started at a public middle school, they thought I would be fine because I had gone through 6 years without one..

CSign, please stop taking everything I say as a personal attack. What I said still stands......Public schools tend to automaticly assume that a good accomondation is an FM device. If a person survived quite a few years without one, I assume that she could most likely do well without one.......My advice was pretty much to try it. It might be helpful, but doing other stuff might equally be of benefit. Try it out.....benefit from FM does seem to vary a lot from person to person.
