Ok,y'all.. I've been thinkin about gettin a job with big newspaper company deliver newspapers...make extra easy cash. I collect SSDI as most of you already know. How does this work? I know you must report to SSA if you are workin. I just dont want to lose my disability benefits. Maybe someone is workin part time and collect full benefits can help me out with this. :ty:

Don't know how it works in another state, but I think in NJ if you make more than $1,000, they take away some or all of your SSI. As for SSD, I think they give you a trial work period (9 months) where you can make as much as you can and they don't take your benefits away. After the trial work period is up, you cannot make a certain amount per month (I forget how much) or they'll take away your SSD.

Just to be sure, you can always call your SSA and ask.

Good luck.

simple. look up the current SGA on SSA website. That the max you can earn on ssdi before it starts messing with your amount. however - its best to stay under that amount for many reasons.

It varies by location. Some places limit $1,000. Other places limit $900.

Yes, you will have to report to them how much you make. Be careful though... they are very anal about how much you make.

For instance, they tell you that your limit is $923 per month. If you make $923.01, then that's considered "over" and you will be penalized for it. When I say "penalized", I don't mean a hefty fine against you... but whatever you have worked out with them.

Where I live, they allow you to go "over" 9 times before they cut support.

Another reason why it's often risky with going close to the monthly limit is because of when we get paid.

Let's suppose you get paid every Friday. Some months have 4 Fridays and some have 5 Fridays. If you established a steady schedule weekly of $230, then you know you would be fine and not go over the $923 limit. However, one month... you happen to have a 5th Friday... which takes you over the $923 limit. Oops! The same applies to bi-weekly checks. What if you get paid the first, third, and fifth Friday? That's 3 checks instead of 2! Yikes!

So, be careful with how much you're making and how often you're working.

My best suggestion for the "better safe than sorry" approach would be to consider every month as being 5 weeks long. With that, you can take the monthly limit and divide that by 5 to determine your weekly earnings. In that case, a limit of $923 would give you a safe weekly limit of $184. :thumb:

Oh, I forgot to add... some companies provide bonuses. You may not always know about it, but they reward you with a bonus depending on what you did during work. That bonus can take you over as well. Eek!

Forget SSI, SSDI. Find a full time job. America need your taxes.

I have heard some hearing people complain about deaf people collecting SSDI. Well, the hearing people should shut up and give deaf people jobs!

Substantial Gainful Activity

I strongly suggest you to contact your local SSA and ask them if you ever used up the trail work period aka twp before or not. Its important to know if you did use up it before or not. Its the best thing for you to be patience and talk with your claims representative and ask tons of questions. So you would be aware more and less asking people. SSA people may be the best thing to be asked.

If you used up twp then focus on making under $1010 per month aka 4 weeks, not 5 weeks.

just look up The United States Social Security Administration I d be glad if you plan to work part time while youre on SSDI so it helps a lot for people who receives retirement benefit. :ugh3:

If you do not make more than $720 during SGA then it would not count on your TWP. It has not been used the 9 months of twp if it makes less than $720 per month, mont earning. BUT you still need to ask your local SSA about it and get the black and white in paper.

I still think you should go ahead and ask them for the work activiy (ssa 821) form then they will explain it to you and more questions from there.

Work Activity Report - Form SSA-821-BK only if you returns to work but contact your local SSA first.

Very interestin, thanks yall..will take my time and visit SSA so I can talk to them

I know several deaf friends of mine who tried odd jobs but part time only for a long time. one of my friend finally found a permanent job and laid off the SS benefit. This person really wanted a full time job so bad but wasn't able to find one until recently.

Whoa, didn't you know that alot of hearing people receive SSDI as well when they become disabled after at least 10 years of work? In other words, deaf people are not the only ones receiving SSDI.

My ex-brother-in-law receives SSDI about $1,000/mo and he told me that in his state, SSA allows him to get an income of $2,000 max per month so he got a job that pays $1,000 or less per mo. $1,000 SSDI plus $1,000 part-time job equal $2,000 per month.

Hearing people aren't complaining about deaf people getting the benefit. Hearing people are complaining that deaf people don't want to work. And, I know deaf people who also admit to this or that know other deaf people who admit to this.

And, there is no reason deaf people can't run their own business or work. Is it easier for us? NO! But, that doesn't mean it is not possible.

The benefit should be there for the people who need it.

Yes, I really need my SSDI just to survive. If I was a hearin, that would help me tremendous.

That day may come when I need that benefit, but not today.

Well, deafness is on disability list under the federal government so deaf people have that advantage. Sure, they can work but they are lazy. That's their choice. (I am talking about SSI, not SSDI.) Alot of them who receive SSI are on a tight budget. Too bad for them. Remember, don't lend them money if they ask you for it. Fuck them.

Good point, if the law says they can have it then it might as well be used as an advantage. However, I doubt whatever you get from the benefit alone is anywhere near what you would make working. I can't imagine it being that good. And, what about retirement? You don't get any 401k or other benefits, right? It can't be the best of situations.

EDIT: Not making a point not to use it here. If anyone needs the benefit, my position is to take it.

Yes, I'm aware of hearing people collecting SSDI.

I was referring to hearing people complaining against deaf people getting SSDI.

I know a few hearing people who get SSDI. One had life-threatening surgery. As a result, he's unable to hold a real job due to constant medical attention. So, he's collecting SSDI.

There was a hearing woman who was collecting SSDI because her fingernails were too long.

Really? How can long fingernails become a disability? There's no excuse for her not to trim them.

Can you imagine that anyone who has long fingernails is eligible for SSDI? "Hey, I have long fingernails, therefore I am disabled."
