I looked into it a bit, but don't know much more about it than what we read. I don't know anyone up that way who would have any real knowledge of the situation. That was quite a little crime spree he went on, including two armed robberies. Still, that was an unusual sentence. My best guess is that he already had a pretty extensive criminal record involving serious crimes, possibly stretching back into his early teen years. If that is the case, the criminal justice system probably just came to the end of the road with him.
The judge in this case has been around a long time, so I don't think it would be a reaction to any prior criticism. I don't think this particular judge would react to criticism one way or the other.
