My son stayed by himself for an hour after school before I got home from work when he was 12. But he had to stay in the house and no one was allowed in the house unless it was my brother or his grandmother. I was always nervous until I got home, though.
On the other hand, by the time I was 13, I was watching both of my brother's boys while he and his wife would go out to dinner and a movie, or to a party, and they were only 1 1/2 years old, and 6 months old. so, I guess it depends on the kid.
