I agree with a lot you said, but I
never knock on strange doors I can't see through. It's an exercise in complete futility, because I have no clue what's happening on the other side.
When I go alone to a friend's house, I'll say beforehand that I'll knock but please don't yell "Come in," 'cause I won't.
For my own house, I have a door button that flashes a strobe. I tell friends about it, and if strangers can't see to press the button, then they bruise their knuckles for nothing.
