That happened once when I was in the 6th grade. A fellow student leaned over and tried to whisper in my ear. I was like, "I'm deaf. That means I can't hear you." I think I embarrassed the poor girl.
Most of the time I get the "tell her" thing. If I'm with an interpreter, I usually lipread and just answer the question. I love the little jump they do - "omg she's deaf but she can talk???" *ewg*
