Too late? I doubt it. Ever heard of Mexican-American War? They fought for 2 years and Americans won the war and lands. It was chance for the Mexicans to have the land but guess what, they have lost to the Americans by armed conflicts. And the lands (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, and Utah) are "turned" over to the US.
