It's also interesting that many of the black families have been here since slave days; they didn't leave after emancipation. They have last names of Manigault, Pinckney, Middleton, Heyward, Guilliard, etc., the same names of the local plantations and historical Charlestonians.

There is a lot of cultural (including language) variety among the black population of this area. Urban blacks, rural blacks, and sea island blacks are very different from each other and don't easily "mix."
