I have a lot of friends who get SSI/SSDI to help them pay for college since most out-of-state colleges cost more than in-state colleges. Also, it is strongly encouraged by most VRs to find other means of financial support as well.

If you live in Texas and want to go to a Texas college, then there's no need for SSI/SSDI since the state will pay for you.

In your case, that could be a problem. You can't have a lot of money and suddenly say, "I want SSI." You have to prove that you're poor or need financial help. Having a lot of money in your bank account isn't going to help.

They also look at your age. Usually, those who are under 24 years of age are considered still under the care of their parents. So, they will look at the earnings of the parents before considering you. If you are 24 or older, then they will only look at you.

The age might be different now, but that's what it was in 2000.
