I access my credit union account on-line. It requires my account number and password. Then, it prompts two more security questions before I can access my account. If I go in person to the credit union, I need my account number and ID card to prove who I am. I haven't used the phone for access, so I don't know what they ask. But if they use only a birth date and last 4 numbers, then that doesn't seem very secure.
You're right that parents would know their child's birth date.
I'm not sure if my parents knew my SSN.
