My mom usually ask me to page to her email account whatever I get to my traveling point safe.
Once I had to go to Greece and warned her that I might not have any access to email her when I take a 4 hour train ride from Athens to a small town to meet a friend after I made a long flight - and she still insisted me to find a way to send a message to her, no matter what. So, I just sent her a fax, with only few words..."I love you, Mom!" - and she will know that I made to that small town in a different county safe-n-sound!
Other thing, my mom usually lecture me to FOLLOW my guts, not other people... and make wise decisions as well.
