It is understandable the police were brought in. This was a very visible and emotional murder trial. Scott's family has every right to remove his stuff just like Laci's family has every right to keep her stuff.

There probably were lots of people gawking and being curious. The media was there. People could have caused trouble by helping out Laci's family or Scott's family, or fighting amongst themselves in the Laci or Scott supporter camps. Tempers could have flared between the family members and the public. Fights could have broken out between family members.

That's the role of the police; to keep peace in the public and to prevent assaults.
