I know what you mean. We did tried anything before buying. We also lay on the mattresses. We thought foam mattress is so super & different from normal bed mattresses when we tried it. We were influenced by buyer to buy them because my hubby has problem with his backache.
My hubby said that our old one is better than foam mattress. I got backache sometimes since we got foam mattress.
At first we were happy with it, then around 6 months later foam mattress is not longer firm as you tried for a first time, so we kept on re-fresh to comfort the foam mattress.
