I was thinking of moving my forum to a domain, and making a Sci-Fi page for it, so it'd be similar to the Hyperboreans forum/site. Yes, it's tricky to learn. PHP is online programming so when you attempt to view the source of a PHP file elsewhere, all you get is the HTML code. However, the coding is pretty similar to find so you can simply open a page and view the HTML to find the width. Once you find it, you could find it easier when viewing the PHP files yourself. You could copy your forums to a sub-folder or something... then play around with it. That way, if you make a mistake... it won't affect the real forums.
