I think you are spot on! Don't let one person's bad day get in the way of you accomplishing your goals. You will get it. Continue practicing, and keep your chin up. If your teacher signs something you don't understand, don't be afraid to "speak up". You need to ask those questions when you don't understand something. It doesn't mean you're unintelligent, it means you're determined to gain fluency in a new language.

Is your teacher Deaf? Have you thought about expressing how that situation felt to her/him? It sounded like a counter-productive exercise...
