sorry about your family member.  but you shouldn't be afraid for them. you shouldn't be afraid of ghost either, sure there are some that are horrible and rotten but there are others that just want interaction.
no ghosts do not only come out at night. u saw my first apparition in the afternoon. i my guess is investigations take place at night because it is easier to capture evidence w/o the glare of the sun.
