My 8 year old daughter stepped way out of line and you know what I did? I took her computer privileges away for a month. She's not touched the computer at home for almost a month. Today she whined about it and I gave her a stern warning that if she continued to whine about it, I would make her wait an additional week. She immediately stopped whining about it. Three more days and she will get *some* of her computer privileges back. She mostly plays games through her school's Learning is Fun site. She also lost her iPod indefinitely when she was caught with it at school after being told repeatedly to NEVER take it to school. Her DS has also been taken away for the same reason the computer was taken away.
In my house, either you obey the rules and do what is expected of you or you lose privileges for a while. Two weeks is a slap on the wrist. Older kids will simply just wait it out or they will go to a friend's house and use their computer - to an 8 year old, one month is a long time, for an older kid, they would lose the privileges for at least two months - that's almost an entire summer vacation.
I remember growing up, if I got bad grades, my privileges were revoked until the next report card came out - yes I lost privileges for an entire 9-week grading period, but I didn't forget it and didn't repeat the mistake twice.
