Perhaps, and in some cases with earthquakes, they can release gas which would be lethal to us and the animals. However, if that was the case, we would have seen more than just the dead birds and fish. Unless it was in an isolated location.
I hope we'll find an answer soon though. With the fish, they are saying it may be a disease affecting just the drum fish. For the birds, we don't know yet.
