I've seen mechanic welds exhaust pipe near gas tank several times. They know what they're doing. I would agree that removing shaft would be easier but it still requires cutting some wires wrapped around end of tranny and end of axle differental in order to remove shaft.

I would agree get a new or remanufactured shaft because of balance issue. I bet the mattress wire wrapped shaft may have bent just a little. Little bent can affect balance greatly thus wearing out bearings and U-Joints.
