Even though this is a bit different, it does apply. My grandmother on my dad's side was married to my grandfather, but he died at around 43 years old, (I was like 4 when that happened) he died in his sleep. She later remarried to my step-grandfather BUT she still wanted to keep the last name from my dead grandfather so when she re-married to my step-grandfather she still kept my grandfather's last name and did not take my step-grandfather's last name at all. My step-grandfather understands and has accepted that my grandmother wanted to keep my grandfather's name in memory and to keep a legacy.

Also, my current last name is not my original last name. I have never been married before but I was born with a different last name but when I was about a year old or so my mother married a guy and took his last name and had my last name changed to his last name, and told him I was his child when I was 6 months old before they married so that we could get his insurance benefits and shit - he had a stable job and everything and I was born with all sorts of health issues and my mother was just a 16 years old teenager when I was born, she was just doing this for survival reasons (I'm most likely not his child)...to this day I hate my current last name and sometimes refer myself to others with my original last name or I even refer to others with my fiance's last name. But when I get married I will be taking my fiance's last name instead because I like it better than my current last name - my current last name is only a reminder of my abusive childhood and a bad past and the fact that my "father" gave me up to the state...like I was garbage. I want to put all that behind me, hence my wanting to get rid of my current last name and taking my fiance's last name when we get married. So I don't want to keep my current last name anymore but it is expensive to change it back to my original last name so I am just gonna wait until I and my fiance are ready to get married and then I will take my fiance's last name and get rid of my current last name, it's less of a hassle this way. I won't even be doing the hyphenated last names shit.

Also if possible, when I get married and have the paperwork done to take my fiance's last name I will try to see if I can also legally change my first name to Lucia and move my current first name to a middle name (I would have 2 middle names if that does happen) at the same time. I want to keep my current first name as a middle name for historical reasons and in memory of my late mother who gave me this current first name. I just don't really like my current first name, that's all. I prefer to go by Lucia.
