Sorry for my above post... but.

People need to see both ways, a bit, I think.

1. There is no 'private cell' in a prison. Individual cells are provided to separate prisoners for safety purposes, not give privacy (prisoners have no privacy, the room can be raided at any time, and searched)

2. Prisoners still have basic human rights, (in the USA, at least) so they will have some 'luxuries', especially to help cut down riots and poor conditions (and plus, due to human rights activists and lawyers)

3. Making them work would be a good idea, they do try to make them work (prisons don't clean them selves, some run farms, or manufacture things, etc) but it is hard to make a prisoner work without having problems with point #2. They tend to feel that being locked up is more than enough.
